Many cultures in east asia have come to prize the double eyelid as the standard of beauty. When one decides to alter their physical appearence, the eye is one of the first steps. I wonder when we decided, as a society, that having big, round eyes was prettier than not.
The ink portraits are of me, with the eyes of anglo saxon women collaged on some of them. Oddly, combining a Japanese face with western eyes doesn't end up looking out of place, because girls in Japan have already gone there.
They say "eyes are the window to the soul." It is one of the biggest ways we communicate and perceive the world. When they are altered, what happens? Or are we giving the eyes too much credit, and it should be seen as a trivial act to alter them?
