Holding Hands (Sujetándose de la mano)

Las piezas son formas que resultan de apretar un pequeño bloque de arcilla con mi mano, dejando la forma negativa de mi puño cerrado para que otros la sostengan y sientan la forma de mi mano. Este trabajo procesual se completa cuando los participantes invitados llegan a la galería y seleccionan una pieza para llevarse a cambio de dejar su propia pieza de la misma forma con materiales proporcionados por la artista en el sitio. Este intercambio es una muestra de mi agradecimiento a quienes han estado conmigo durante mis primeros años de vida en Ecuador. Al final, todas mis piezas originales se dispersarán entre mis amigos, mientras que sus piezas permanecerán conmigo.
La idea de este trabajo se me ocurrió durante la pandemia de COVID-19, cuando me sentí desconectada de mi red habitual de amigos, en quienes confío mucho como residente extranjera. También aborda los desafíos de la creación artística desde una práctica de estudio exclusiva y solitaria hasta una que es procesual y colaborativa. Al permitir que el intercambio sea parte del trabajo se encarna la idea de interdependencia para la supervivencia, un desmantelamiento de las jerarquías entre artista y participante y, en última instancia, reinventa la forma en que abordamos nuestro futuro colectivo.

The pieces are forms that resulted from squeezing a small block of clay with my hand, leaving the negative shape of my clenched fist for others to hold and feel the shape of my hand. This processual work is completed when invited participants comes to the gallery and select a piece to take with them in exchange for leaving their own piece of the same form behind (materials provided by artist on site). This exchange is a token of my appreciation for those who have been with me throughout my first few years of life in Ecuador. In the end, all my original pieces will be dispersed among my friends, while their pieces remain with me.
The idea for this work came to me during the pandemic, when I felt disconnected from my usual network of friends, whom I rely on greatly as a foreign resident. It also addresses challenges of art making from an exclusive and solitary studio practice to one that is processual and collaborative. By allowing the exchange to be part of the work, it embodies the idea of interdependence for survival, a dismantling of hierarchies between artist and participant, and ultimately reimagines how we approach our collective future.
This work was first exhibited in Cuerpos Cuerdas, a group exhibition curated by Albeley Rodríguez Bencomo, organized by Arte Mujeres Ecuador, held in the French Alliance Quito.
